London Shakespeare Workout LSW Prison Project

Verse in Time

Text by Glyn

Dear Bruce,

I had to write to tell you how much we all enjoyed the ‘Shakespeare Workshop’ last Tuesday afternoon.  As you could see, we were a mixed bunch!  The group was made up of people from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, South America and North America.  Without exception, each woman there has gained so much from your visit.

All the staff in our Education Department do their very best to put on interesting and stimulating classes and workshops, but I am sure even they would agree there has been nothing to compare with your ‘Shakespeare’.

Although we are all prisoners, we are here for a wide variety of reasons, not just for being ‘bad’.  It is vital for us to have opportunities for uninhibited expression and interaction and to have new experiences.

We would love you to come here again, perhaps on a regular basis?  I know it might be difficult to arrange and I also know that your costs have to be met, but please try if you can.

Please also thank the other members of your group for their friendliness and hard work.

Yours sincerely,
Glyn

The following is a Witsling that Glyn kindly wrote – alongside the other women – in a few minutes in the session referenced:

Who will believe my verse in time to come?

Take this as given, guardedly to some.
Use for yourself the wisdom I impart:
Seek not to sever claims upon your heart.
Embrace the love this world can give to you.
Don’t turn your back.  Devour it.  See it through.
